Wednesdays are the Worst

This week Philly Ad Kids are going political. Get your Uncle Sam top hat on and brush off those George Bush Sux signs, because we're looking at this year's best and WORST political ad campaigns. Thank you to Matt Lauer, who did this work for us basically, with the help of MSNBC political correspondent Chuck Todd, and Donny Deutch from ad agency Deutch Inc.

Media Relations 101

Knowing when to talk and when to shut up and listen

by: Christine Guerrini

Reporters are used to being talked at all day long.  Their email inboxes are over:flowing with messages screaming, “Pick me, pick me!” and I doubt they can leave their desk for five minutes without coming back to that annoying red light on their answering machines.  This constant barrage of information can make it difficult to get your client’s message to the top of the pile.  Many times, public relations professionals think the answer is the just to talk louder.  But, last week, what started out as a routine follow-up call ended up as one of the best media relations lessons I could get:  Shut up and listen.

Antoine Dodson's App Attack

Hide you Kidz, Hide yo...

Ok, I admit that this might be getting a little long in the tooth.

Antoine Dodson, this year's greatest (in my opinion) web celeb is back on the beat to protect you from "those nasty bed (pronouced baad) intruders." AD is gonna teach you how to keep yo huzbandz safe with the Sex Offender Tracker app. I just want to know if there's an app to protect my eyes from AD's gingivitis. I recommend Crest Whitening Expressions. It cleans yo teef good and it's tastes delicious.

Axe Lashes Out @ Old Spice

By: Nicole Lustig

Hey everyone! This week's ad has us in Canada where Axe is going straight for the jugular of Old Spice and its fans.

Unless you've been living under a rock, Old Spice's wildly popular campaign, "The Man Your Man Could Smell Like" has garnered international attention and a plethora of awards. Feeling the pain, Axe has unleashed new billboards across Canada, taking a stab at beefy men that are seemingly more preoccupied with horses rather than women. The billboard speaks for itself, really. Now in my opinion, I haven't been stirred by an Axe advertisement since they had women smelling it through the pipes of their apartment buildings. The Old Spice campaign not only took a simple idea and made it appeal to everyone (not to mention Isaiah Mustafa in a towel helped), but it infiltrated nearly every branch of media we connect with.

The PAK “Redesign” Competition

In an effort to prevent Philly Ad Kids from becoming as stale as the box of Ritz Crackers that you’ve had in your pantry since 2003 (or Grampa’s favorite holiday story about World War II), I am looking to you to create a fresh new image for PAK. Submit a killer redesign for the Facebook profile picture and see your work featured for an entire week. But wait, there’s more (pan to audience, faces gleaming with anticipation and joy). To sweeten the pot, winner(s) will get a few extra goodies. Tell em what they’ve won Rod!

FCKH8 Gets Mad & Goes Social

Let me begin by saying that I do not personally like the video that is being used for this campaign. I think that young boy that starts cursing in the 1st 10 seconds is awkward. I think that the level of anger exhibited in this video may only further cement the position of conservative Christians, who believe homosexuality to be a lifestyle of hedonistic heathens. I wish that the argument were smarter, and less retaliatory. But who cares what I think?

La-Z-Girl

By: Dave Corbin

Back in August, the furniture company La-Z-Boy posted a loss of $200,000 for the first quarter of 2011. Certainly, the fine folks La-Z-Boy gathered together in a boardroom, not only comfortably, but possibly reclined. Someone said: "We need to do something about this". As these things tend to go, everybody nodded in agreement, and a plan was hatched.
